John Tweed

With extensive experience as both an entrepreneur and an executive in the distribution and freight transportation industries, John Tweed has been involved in every aspect of the business. He and his leadership team oversaw management of all Landair and Covenant operations and customer service. Those day-to-day operations included logistics strategy development and implementation, sales and marketing, fleet operations and maintenance, recruiting, finance, safety, and information technology, as well as the company’s continuous improvement and environmental sustainability initiatives.

During his 35-year career with Landair, Tweed held various positions.  Early in his career he served as Vice President of Sales.  In 1996, he co-founded Warehouse Logistics, LLC, a contract distribution services company jointly owned with Landair’s founder, Scott M. Niswonger. Warehouse Logistics later merged with Landair, strengthening the company’s warehouse distribution operations and capabilities. Tweed was named CEO of Landair in 2000, leading it for 3 years as a public company (NASDAQ: LAND). In 2018 Covenant Transport acquired Landair.  After the sale, Tweed served as EVP and COO of Landair and was ultimately named Co-President and COO of Covenant Logistics Group until his retirement in July of 2021.

Since retiring John has remained active utilizing his experience to benefit various companies and business leaders.  This includes consulting for logistics companies and assisting with new venture start-ups for Companies in the  Petroleum and Packaging industries.  In addition, he is proud to work with the Tweed Family Foundation serving the region of Northeast Tennessee.

Tweed holds a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from East Tennessee State University and completed two executive education programs in finance and organizational management at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. 

John Tweed is a native of Greeneville, Tennessee where he lives with his wife of over 25 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. Outside of work John enjoys spending time with his family, dirt track racing, and playing guitar.

    The Niswonger Foundation was established in 2001 to make a positive and sustainable difference in education in Northeast Tennessee. This dream was envisioned by Scott M. Niswonger, who founded Landair Transport, Inc. and Forward Air Corporation. These companies were the first two Greeneville-based companies to be taken public in the history of Greene County, Tennessee. Jointly, the companies have combined annual revenue of over one-billion-dollars and employ more than 5000 people.
