Joe graduated from Greeneville High School. He is the son of Gerald Watson; and Shirley Watson-Johnston and Lanny Johnston. Joe graduated summa cum laude with a degree in political science from Furman University.
He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, was named the Furman “Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year,” and was Furman’s candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship. Joe completed internships with the Steve Henry Law Firm and the Furman Political Science Department. He completed a study abroad program in Italy.
Joe is a graduate of University of Tennessee College of Law. He served as a graduate assistant for the U.T. football program and worked with the U.S. Attorney’s office in Knoxville. Joe is a partner at Waller, Lansden, Dortch and Davis law firm, in Nashville, where he resides.
The Niswonger Foundation was established in 2001 to make a positive and sustainable difference in education in Northeast Tennessee. This dream was envisioned by Scott M. Niswonger, who founded Landair Transport, Inc. and Forward Air Corporation. These companies were the first two Greeneville-based companies to be taken public in the history of Greene County, Tennessee. Jointly, the companies have combined annual revenue of over one-billion-dollars and employ more than 5000 people.
